Stephen Street is a PhD student in the Chemistry Department of the University of Reading (UK). His research field of interest focuses on novel lipopeptides and their use in medicine. Stephen completed his Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Biochemistry at the University of Bath including a project which investigated the potential use of a newly discovered compound in the roundworm (C. elegans) as an antimalarial agent. He then went on to complete a Master’s degree (MSc) in Molecular Biosciences (Biotechnology) also at the University of Bath with a project focusing on mutations and their impact on fitness in arabidopsis thaliana.
Stephen Street will present his research objective which revolves around the use of novel antimicrobial peptides for use in the treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. He will cover the history of antibiotics, the challenges facing current therapies resulting from the rise of SUPERBUGS (multi drug resistant bacteria),current research and treatment strategies, and the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance utilised by different strains of bacteria. His goal is to investigate the potential of newly developed lipopeptides as adjunct therapies for the synergistically enhancement of current antibiotics.
